I recently read Dr. King jr’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and it has been assigned to me many times over the years and I have never really understood or read the letter until Monday in class during a discussion. Dr. King was a very educated and talented man as well a writer. This was a very beautifully written piece his choice in words and how he put them together was absolutely amazing.
In this article King Jr. is very upset and he has every right to be. He had been placed in jail for a very insignificant reason, for parading without a permit. Some people think he was there to start trouble but HOW!!!! King Jr. and his followers practicing nonviolence and also he was invite by an affiliated organization that he is president of so how on earth was he an “outsider coming in”. The sarcasm he uses in this letter is brilliant and a very good technique. He states “We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights. The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jet like speed toward gaining political independence, but we still creep at horse and buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter. Perhaps it is easy for those who have never felt the stinging darts of segregation to say, "Wait." But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim” (king 2).
In this statement he was absolutely right and it makes me question will discrimination completely be erased or will co-workers and everyday people secretly hate you simply because of the color of your skin.
